She was dying during the writing and recording of that record, and in the middle of doing vocals, she died. And he picks Journey. We finished the record. All creative processes are a love-hate thing. And that is sort of a drag. I moved over there. So I'm setting up a situation now where I'm going to be wearing headphones and have a live mic in the room, and also have a click track. When you changed your sound, what was the thought process behind that? I had very mixed emotions I thought, Heres a good opportunity for me, but under the worst conditions. Asked whether the possibility of being offered the job had occurred to him, he said: Did I have a feeling it was going to go that way? Everybody at the airport, man, walkin by, givin me the thumbs-up, like, Yo! Some of em, I think the answer is yes. He said he was having health issues, and he needed to have hip replacement, and this and that. But the fact that you had thatthats a measure of how big you were. Thats right. I told him what my deal was and he agreed to it. At home, I've got a drum kit, but the trouble with a drum kit at home is that it's so damn loud, it blows your hearing. Was that a hard pill to swallow at first? You dont seem to understand how much I wanted to sing in that band. I think back in the day, there was a decision, by a couple of key editors, to never give us our just desserts. I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. Dunbar began his career on the British blues-rock scene, playing with Champion Jack Dupree and Eddie Boyd before becoming the drummer for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1967; he was influenced by jazz and the Who's Keith Moon as well. That's basically what it's all about. And you can only run on the road and be in front of people so long before it doesnt fix you enough, to where you can run away from things you havent addressed. Except once in Dallas! The way I play is based on feeling-not on something I've been told to do. And then he left the band for good. Have you followed whats gone on since then, at all? Gretchen H v. I was the new kid in town. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." I mean, its in my blood, yknow? Did you have to go to London? Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. He didn't have any idea of which side of the beat he was on half of the time. asked me if I'd like to join his band, with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. And so they gave us an ultimatumyou either get a frontman, or were gonna drop you from the label. RM: I noticed you and Craig looking at each other a lot. You were feeling like you were going to burn it out. AD: When I started off listening to music as a child, I always followed the lead. Grand Wazoo was charts. Im not. Ive tried to talk him out of it, but he wants to do it. And then he did his second one, and I said OK, look, if he does a second one, Im probably going to end up doing one. Then [drummer] Steve Smith wanted to do a jazz record. We were all lovin it. It has a lot of open rolls, 16th notes, 5-stroke rolls and triplets in nice little combinations. And I tried to get to David Chase to try to thank him, and I have yet to be able to. RM: What set-up are you using these days? RM: Earlier, you mentioned that you don't..like playing songs note for note the same every time. Pete writes these big, off the wall, sort of English rock songs, with big dramatic openings and classical-type things. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. Its been your band longer than it was ever Steves band. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. AD: I left school when I was 15, and immediately formed a trio with a sax player and a keyboard player. The answer is of course theres differences between us all! But the truth is, no. AD: R&B was happening, and traditional jazz. RM: Do you ever write out charts for yourself? Then shortly thereafter, I called Jon and Neal together. They would have kept going, I know that. You get in a baseball team and some people like each other and some people hate each other, but they still play together. I would read in down beat that so and so's new record was out, I'd go to the shop and never see it. AD: The only times we would actually play together was maybe when she would be playing vibes. And some funk. "I led his band in the end, that's what happened. I'd like to sit at home and work on that sort of stuff. And our bass player Richard Michaels got killed in a Fourth of July holiday accident on the freeway. Cant you just, yknownot do that? And, he asked me again: We wanna know when youre going to surgery. AD: Oh yeah. And then the next three days after that, I was terrible to be around. People trying to sell hot dogs with your music. Lou had called a day off, so I was going to go, but when Lou found out about it, he called a recording session for that night. Youre just responding to a question I asked. Much like a lot of people are. And it rolls around, and halfway through the song it starts rolling back out. Eventually he came back. RM: And he, in turn, will take you to different places; RM: This all ties in with what you were telling me the other night about how you base most of what you do on listening to the melody. Anybody who plays in a group must realize that everybody in the group must always be aware of everybody else. I sing with myself all the time I'm playing. AD: I started playing violin when I was nine. Reviewers can curse about them and reconstruct their ideas about them or give you a lousy write up, but as long as the solo went down well that night, you can't believe anything a critic says. I remember by the end of that tour [pause], feeling musically toasty, feeling emotionally toasty, feeling vocally toasty, and, um, [pause] telling the manager, I just dont want to stay out here and keep doing this. I was taken to London by the Mojos.
