I told him what my deal was and he agreed to it. At home, I've got a drum kit, but the trouble with a drum kit at home is that it's so damn loud, it blows your hearing. Was that a hard pill to swallow at first? You dont seem to understand how much I wanted to sing in that band. I think back in the day, there was a decision, by a couple of key editors, to never give us our just desserts. I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. Dunbar began his career on the British blues-rock scene, playing with Champion Jack Dupree and Eddie Boyd before becoming the drummer for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1967; he was influenced by jazz and the Who's Keith Moon as well. That's basically what it's all about. And you can only run on the road and be in front of people so long before it doesnt fix you enough, to where you can run away from things you havent addressed. He didn't have any idea of which side of the beat he was on half of the time. asked me if I'd like to join his band, with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. And so they gave us an ultimatumyou either get a frontman, or were gonna drop you from the label. RM: I noticed you and Craig looking at each other a lot. You were feeling like you were going to burn it out. AD: When I started off listening to music as a child, I always followed the lead. Grand Wazoo was charts. Im not. Ive tried to talk him out of it, but he wants to do it. And then he did his second one, and I said OK, look, if he does a second one, Im probably going to end up doing one. Then [drummer] Steve Smith wanted to do a jazz record. We were all lovin it. It has a lot of open rolls, 16th notes, 5-stroke rolls and triplets in nice little combinations. And I tried to get to David Chase to try to thank him, and I have yet to be able to. RM: What set-up are you using these days? RM: Earlier, you mentioned that you don't..like playing songs note for note the same every time. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. AD: I left school when I was 15, and immediately formed a trio with a sax player and a keyboard player. I would read in down beat that so and so's new record was out, I'd go to the shop and never see it. AD: The only times we would actually play together was maybe when she would be playing vibes. And some funk. "I led his band in the end, that's what happened. I'd like to sit at home and work on that sort of stuff. And our bass player Richard Michaels got killed in a Fourth of July holiday accident on the freeway. Cant you just, yknownot do that? And, he asked me again: We wanna know when youre going to surgery. AD: Oh yeah. And then the next three days after that, I was terrible to be around. People trying to sell hot dogs with your music. I was taken to London by the Mojos.
